A Note on the Relation between Toxicity, Resistance, and Time of Survival
نویسنده
چکیده
I An interpretation of curves obtained in disinfection, hemolysis, and similar experiments was given in a previous paper. A general equation was offered which made the calculation of the time of survival possible if certain simple assumptions were made concerning the relation between toxicity and concentration. One of the assumptions made was that the toxicity is proportional to the concentration. This assumption led to an equation which agreed with the experimental data in a narrow range only. There were also difficulties concerning the possible limits of integration in this case. The concentration can obviously be raised to any value before the time becomes 0. But in order that this may be possible according to the equation it had to be assumed that the resistance can possess negative values. The meaning of the resistance became thus rather vague if not absurd. It is now realized that the general equation t ffi-a ln(k-r)-{-k (1) (t = time, k = toxicity, r = resistance, a and k are constants) given previously, is incompatible with the assumption that k = f (c) N c, because if r is constant t becomes negative when c approaches infinity. According to Equation 1, k must approach a finite value as c approaches infinity lira he-+. ffi lim f(c)o-oo-const.

Effects of n3-HUFA enriched Daphnia magna on growth, survival, stress resistance, and fatty acid composition of larvae of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus)
Effects of Daphnia magna enriched with cod liver oil (CLO) as a source of highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) on growth, survival, stress resistance, and fatty acid composition of the Persian sturgeon larvae were evaluated. Daphnia enriched for three different time periods (3, 6, and 9 hours) and non-enriched Daphnia were fed to the Persian sturgeon larvae (average weight 61.6±0.4mg) during 14...
متن کاملOn the Relation between Toxicity, Resistance, and Time of Survival, and on Related Phenomena
1. A relation between toxicity, resistance, and time of survival has been derived on the basis of the assumption that the time is a function of a parameter which is the difference between the toxicity and the resistance. Toxicity and resistance act like forces which can maintain an equilibrium-like (or stationary) state. If the equilibrium is upset, the time at which the event (death) occurs is...

متن کاملComparison of Antimicrobial Properties and Toxicity of Natural S3 Peptide with Horseshoe Crab Amoebocyte Origin and its Mutants
Introduction: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are compounds with antimicrobial properties that are studied widely due to the development of resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics. In the present study, the toxicity and antimicrobial effects of two natural monomeric peptides (S3 and S∆3) were compared with S3-S∆3 hybrids and S3 tetramers. Material & Methods: Protein hybrids (S∆3S3-2mer-G...
متن کاملThe Influence of Urban Network Features on the Quality of Traffic Service (RESEARCH NOTE)
The work reported here presents a methodology based on a two-fluid model to assess the degree of influence of various geometric and control features of an urban network on the quality of traffic service. The two-fluid model gives a curvilinear relation between the trip time and stop time per unit distance and its parameters characterize the quality of traffic service in urban networks. Any Chan...
